As states across the country take steps to stop the spread of COVID-19–closing schools, canceling events, and shifting to supporting children in their homes and communities–one group of young people is being left behind: the nearly 50,000 youth locked up across the United States.
Despite the rapid spread of COVID-19 in carceral settings, hundreds of young people remain trapped in juvenile detention facilities, jails and prisons in Philadelphia and across the state. In Philly, over 100 young people have been detained for months without a court date in the Juvenile Justice Services Center and the city’s adult jails.
We demand the city – Mayor Kenney, First Judicial District leadership, and District Attorney Krasner – act NOW to release all youth so they can be safe at home with their families and communities.
